When Xavi and Maria purchased Cal Doctor in 2021, the building was in ruins. The upper floor had collapsed, and upon entering, the first thing one would see was rubble — including the bathroom fixtures from above. The kitchen was tiny and separated from the dining room by a wall. They tore it down to create today’s open-plan kitchen, dining, and living space, now flooded with natural light from three large windows.

They also removed the wall that darkened the staircase, revealing a charming nook beneath it, showcasing the home’s original architecture. Upstairs, they removed the false ceilings to uncover the original century-old wooden beams, restoring the building’s historical character.
They chose to preserve the 10 original windows and the modernist-style doors, despite their deteriorated condition. Many people told them it was madness, but Maria stood firm. Today, those restored doors and windows, painted a beautiful vintage blue, give the house its unique personality.

The house was built in 1890, although a roof tile found during the renovation bore the date 1904, causing some confusion. That date is now engraved on a stone in the patio. Cal Doctor was once the home of Dr. Rovira, a well-known figure in Breda, so respected that a town square bears his name.
Over time, the property changed hands and was eventually split into two separate homes. The larger unit — now a tourist rental — includes most of the ground floor and all of the upper floor. The smaller apartment, accessible from Carrer del Vent, was also lovingly restored by Xavi and Maria.
